What does it mean to lead an iconic institution in the city where you grew up? Daniela Amodei, co-founder and president of Anthropic, and Larry Baer, president and CEO of the San Francisco Giants, are two San Francisco natives leading two of the city's most closely followed organizations.

Larry has been a steadfast champion of San Francisco's recovery, while Daniela's Anthropic—the AI safety and research company behind Claude—has become a defining force in the city's AI boom, recently committing to a new downtown headquarters.

In this conversation moderated by The San Francisco Standard's Kevin Delaney, Daniela and Larry will discuss what it takes to lead in San Francisco right now: the realities of scaling in a city in transition, their shared commitment to revitalizing downtown, lessons in leadership across two very different industries, and where the worlds of sports and AI are starting to intersect.

About the Speakers

Daniela Amodei is president and co-founder of Anthropic, an AI lab whose research and products put safety at the frontier. As a public benefit corporation, Anthropic is dedicated to ensuring the world safely makes the transition through transformative AI. Before co-founding Anthropic, Daniela served as the vice president of safety and policy at OpenAI, where she led efforts to ensure the safe development and deployment of AI systems. Prior to her work in the AI industry, Daniela was the head of risk operations at Stripe, a financial technology company, where she oversaw risk management and compliance. Daniela began her career in public service, working in international development and government. Daniela's background in AI safety, risk management, and public policy enables her to effectively guide Anthropic in developing AI systems that promote safety across the industry.

Larry Baer is the president and CEO of the San Francisco Giants. A fourth generation San Franciscan, Larry Baer joined the San Francisco Giants in 1992 as the executive vice president after assembling a new ownership group that kept the team in San Francisco. He was named CEO in 2012. A graduate of UC Berkeley and Harvard Business School, Baer was named the “Person of the Year” by San Francisco Boys and Girls Clubs in 2010, and in 2012 he was honored as the Harvard Business School’s “Alumnus of the Year.” Baer and his wife Pam co-chaired the campaign to Rebuild San Francisco General Hospital, which was successfully completed in 2016. He is co-chair of Advance SF, a founding member of Partnership for San Francisco, and continues to chair and oversee the development of Mission Rock, the 28-acre mixed use neighborhood across from Oracle Park.

Kevin J. Delaney is editor in chief of The San Francisco Standard. He co-founded Charter, the Standard’s sister organization covering the future-of-work. He was previously a managing editor at The Wall Street Journal and senior editor for The New York Times and The Information. Kevin also co-founded Quartz and served as co-CEO and editor in chief. Earlier in his career, Kevin was a reporter at the Journal in Paris and San Francisco and a TV producer in Montreal.
