Join us for a Zoom meeting with winner of the California Book Awards 2024 medal in Californiana, James Tejani, when he speaks with us about A Machine to Move Ocean and Earth: The Making of the Port of Los Angeles—and America.
Most of us in Northern California don't think much about the Port of Los Angeles at San Pedro. This intensive look into the building of that port takes us into a deep inspection of the people and science that went into building it, starting as early as the Spanish missions, land grants of the Mexican government, through the Gold Rush and to the workings of Washington, D.C., to complete the enterprise.
The Port of Los Angeles is what has helped to make California such a world economic power, especially after the opening of the Panama Canal. The author, James Tejani, has woven Native American, environmental, scientific, maritime, political and economic history together to make a very interesting and informative story of Southern California.
