Education Programs and Engagement Manager

Position Overview

The Commonwealth Club of California seeks a dynamic, passionate educator to serve as education programs and engagement manager for our civics education initiative, Creating Citizens. This is a great fit for someone who believes in the power of civil dialogue to bolster the strength of our democracy by uplifting and inspiring the next generation of civic leaders. The education programs and engagement manager is responsible for creating and implementing a well-coordinated strategic initiative to provide educational programs for youth, adults, and intergenerational audiences. They will produce live speaker programs onsite, online, and in local communities; drive awareness, connection, and participation for Creating Citizens audiences through coordinated marketing and outreach; lead a successful social media engagement strategy; and develop and lead a new Youth Advisory Committee. The manager will cultivate an extensive network of partnerships with civic leaders and youth-serving organizations, focusing on those in underserved communities. As part of a small and collaborative team, this position will act to advance the mission and goals of the Education department by working collegially and respectfully with peers throughout the Club, interns, volunteers, and external stakeholders.

The Commonwealth Club of California is the largest public issues forum in the United States and is a nonpartisan, nonprofit membership organization. It is the leader in its field both nationally and internationally, with a fast-paced, lively, and stimulating environment and a range of fascinating and informative people and ideas. The Club hosts daily in-person, online, and hybrid programs that include lectures, panel discussions, roundtables, and special events on issues of public concern and interest, for both engagement and enrichment. Every year, the Club produces several hundred programs with extensive content that is distributed through online video streams, podcasts, a digital magazine, and a weekly national radio broadcast that airs on more than 230 public and commercial stations and other platforms.

Responsibilities

Program Planning and Execution

  • Develop compelling program issues, topics, and formats for targeted Education audiences, within the organizational priorities set by the VP of education
  • Identify speakers and moderators, draft invitations, host speakers and moderators
  • Ensure that speakers receive professional, accurate, and detailed information about program logistics
  • Coordinate with Facilities, Guest Services, Membership, and Development teams to ensure smooth and professional program management
  • Coordinate with AV team for production requirements for audio, video, and online formats

Student Projects

  • Develop goals and outcomes for high school Youth Advisory Committee within the Creating Citizens strategic framework; recruit and supervise student participants
  • Increase Gen Z participation through targeted engagement campaigns and program streams
  • Supervise programmatic and marketing responsibilities of college interns; oversee intern capstone projects

Audience Development and Partnership Cultivation

  • Maintain a growing network of relationships with adult and youth civic leaders and with community-based organizations
  • Meet goal to increase participation by underrepresented and/or marginalized youth
  • Collaborate with teams such as Membership, Climate One, and Travel to expand Club offerings for youth and young adults

Marketing and Communications

  • Lead external marketing and outreach for Creating Citizens, including social media, website, and email communications
  • Develop original content including graphics and video for social media; maintain an active presence on multiple platforms
  • Produce and distribute monthly Education newsletter
  • Coordinate with Club marketing and media teams

Additional Expectations

  • Evaluate program outcomes against goals and make data-driven recommendations for improvement
  • Maintain accurate records and provide informative reports
  • Actively contribute to department planning and collaborative activities
  • Ability to attend in-person and virtual programs and functions outside normal business hours, when required
  • Support fundraising and donor stewardship; ensure that programs meet donors’ goals
  • Support projects led by other teams at the Club, in service to organizational goals and strategies
  • Use multiple software platforms to perform functions including project and budget management, constituent relationships, meetings, and internal and external communications
  • Communicate with all stakeholders with confidence, respect, and tact
  • Complete all assignments accurately, thoroughly, and on deadline
  • Other duties as assigned

Necessary Qualifications and Skills

  • Experience developing and leading interactive educational programs; preference for a candidate with formal or informal teaching in civics, history-social studies, or related fields
  • Established relationships with community leaders and youth-service organizations in the Bay Area preferred
  • Experience supervising, teaching, or coaching teens and/or young adults
  • Demonstrated experience creating social media content and content strategy; ability to analyze traffic and engagement metrics and use data to make creative decisions
  • Understanding of Gen Z characteristics, learning needs, and content consumption
  • Strong organizational, strategic, and project management skills
  • Outstanding written and oral communications
  • Familiarity with Google Suite and Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Experience with a CRM (Salesforce or other) and email marketing software a plus

Desired Credentials

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, political science, history-social studies, or related fields
  • Minimum 3 years’ professional experience teaching or leading programs in formal or informal education settings such as K-12 schools, after-school programs, or youth service nonprofits
  • Specific experience with civics education a plus

Compensation

$63–$75,000, depending on experience. This is a full-time exempt position with benefits, including paid employee health, vision, dental, life, and AD&D, a generous holiday and time-off policy, and a team full of interesting and warm people to work with.
