Humanities MLF program

Member-Led Forums

Member-led Forums (MLFs) are a volunteer-driven division of Commonwealth Club programming. These diverse and timely programs cover a wide range of topics on an ongoing basis throughout the year. They range from large events to intimate discussions with speakers, from art shows and restaurant visits to book discussion groups. MLFs are volunteer-run, organized by Club members who coordinate programs within specific areas of interest.

"After I graduated from college, I wanted to get a job. The War on Poverty had jobs. Off I went to poverty areas, from Salinas, Gilroy, San Francisco, Oakland, Santa Rosa to the Oregon border. I was astonished by the poverty and poor health for workers and their families in fields and migrant areas. At the time (and still today), I remember thinking that a healthy and safe environment is a civil right for everyone—poor or rich.

"The Commonwealth Club was founded as a men's club. Male members would take me to The Commonwealth Club as their guests. The talks and luncheons were wonderful! I admired the Club and the talks very much. And I learned a lot! When the doors opened to women, I joined the Club as soon as possible and have been a member ever since. Also, importantly, I discovered the Environment & Natural Resources MLF—and the importance of diversity—that a healthy and safe environment is a civil right for everyone."
