Kevin Phillips
Former Republican Strategist; Political Analyst; Author, American Theocracy

TITLE: American Theocracy

Acclaimed NPR political commentator Kevin Phillips will explain why he believes that the Republican majority he helped build thirty-five years ago is now threatening the future of democracy in America. After having worked for the Nixon Administration prior to Watergate, Phillips has grown increasingly weary over the past three decades as he has watched the conservative politics he once embraced be usurped by greed, corruption, and rampant shortsightedness. Now, he focuses his attention on the Bush Administration, and will address how he sees it has failed the American people in the areas of energy policy, the separation of church and state, and the budget.

Since his 1969 book, The Emerging Republican Majority, won him instant recognition for predicting the political consequences of the economic and social changes wrought in during the postwar period, Phillips has been known as one of America’s foremost political analysts. In addition to regularly contributing to the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times Magazine and The Washington Post, Phillips is a commentator for CBS. He also edits his own newsletter, American Political Report.
