When Copeland and his family moved to San Leandro in 1972, he immediately felt the effects of growing up as an African American in an otherwise all-white suburb. Copeland discusses his own experiences of racial identity, isolation and redemption, and provides a thoughtful examination of how our surroundings help shape who we are.
