SPEAKER: Ali Allawi; Senior Adviser to Iraq's Prime Minister; Author, The Occupation of Iraq

TITLE: Iraq: Winning the War, Losing the Peace

Allawi, a crucial player in shaping Iraq’s new government, will provide his insider’s account of the nascent Iraqi government. The senior leader of Iraq, whose writing has been heralded as the “most perceptive analysis” of Iraq’s reconstruction, will offer his critique of the reconstruction thus far and present his road map for extricating Iraq from the chaos of religious conflict and regional tension currently threatening to engulf it. Allawi recommends Middle Eastern countries build strong governing bodies to address the volatile religious and ethnic issues resulting from the Iraq war. He also underscores the need for Iraqi to remain autonomous, taking the lead of internal affairs.

Allawi is currently the Senior Adviser to Iraq’s Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki. He previously served as Minister of Trade and Defence in the Interim Iraq Governing Council from 2003 to 2004, and as the Minister of Finance in the Iraqi Transitional Government from 2005 to 2006. Before the Iraq war, Allawi was part of the Iraqi community living in exile in London. He was a professor at Oxford University.
