How Has Japan Escaped Plutocratic Populism?

Political leaders in many countries have embraced "plutocratic populism"—mobilizing the masses while catering to wealthy elites. How can a country avoid this trend? Prof. Steven K. Vogel will describe how postwar Japan promoted economic growth while protecting economic equity, leaving the country less vulnerable to the populist backlash we see now in the United States and many other countries.

Steven K. Vogel is a professor of political science and political economy at the University of California, Berkeley, where he specializes in the political economy of the advanced industrialized nations, especially Japan. He is the author of Marketcraft: How Governments Make Markets Work (2018), Japan Remodeled: How Government and Industry Are Reforming Japanese Capitalism (2006), Freer Markets, More Rules: Regulatory Reform in Advanced Industrial Countries (1996), and co-editor (with Naazneen Barma) of The Political Economy Reader: Contending Perspectives and Contemporary Debates (2022).
