Author Shane Bauer was embedded as a guard in a private prison in Winnfield, LA, and his California Book Award silver medal award-winning book takes us through his experiences there, juxtaposed with the history of prisons in America. What makes this book even more compelling is that he was a writer for Mother Jones at the time as well as being a former prisoner in an Iranian jail.
