Nonviolent Peaceforce and Unarmed Civilian Protection: Transforming Conflict
Tiffany Easthom, the executive director of Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP), will tell us about the work NP does in war-torn areas such as South Sudan, Myanmar and Iraq, places where teams of NP unarmed civilian protectors are working each day to protect people from harm and prevent them from having to flee their homes. Based on the concept that Mahatma Gandhi promoted with his Shanti Sena, or “Peace army,” NP has developed a mix of strategies for protecting vulnerable civilians. Several entities at the United Nations consider these strategies effective. The NP also regularly spends time testifying at the United Nations, articulating the need for scaling up the use of unarmed civilian protection in the face of today's armed violence.
