The Island President Screening and Discussion

Jon Shenk, Director, The Island President
In Conversation with Greg Dalton, Climate One, The Commonwealth Club

The new documentary The Island President captures Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed’s first year of office, culminating in his trip to the Copenhagen Climate Summit in 2009, where the film provides a rare glimpse of the political horse-trading that goes on at such a top-level global assembly. Nasheed is unusually candid about revealing his strategies — leveraging the Maldives’ underdog position as a tiny country, harnessing the power of media, and overcoming deadlocks through an appeal to unity with other developing nations.

Earlier this year, Nasheed resigned from office in what he called a coup d’etat. This week Nasheed discussed the plight of the Maldives and climate chaos on the "Late Night with David Letterman" show. Join us for a 20-minute discussion after a screening of the film, which has won plaudits at the Sundance, Toronto and Telluride Film Festivals.

Both the screening and the discussion will take place at the Embarcadero Cinema in Downtown San Francisco. All ticket sales will be handled directly through the cinema.
