About the Commonwealth Club
The nation’s largest and oldest public forum, The Commonwealth Club of California proposes to “find the truth and set it loose upon the world.” In its role as a non-partisan organization, the Club promotes open discussion and civic dialogue on issues that matter most to our community, nation, and world. The Club’s primary office is in downtown San Francisco, with a second office and active presence in Silicon Valley.

Producing more than 450 programs annually, the Club’s content is widely distributed across radio, television, podcasts, and YouTube. The Commonwealth Club is supported by its 22,000-member base, 80,000 annual single ticket buyers, individual donors, and a robust portfolio of corporate and foundation partners. Currently, the Club is in the midst of a capital campaign and intends to open its new facility at 110 The Embarcadero in December 2016. This is an exciting time to join as a staff person of the 113-year-old organization.

The Commonwealth Club offers our members and friends exclusive highly educational tours around the world and domestically. Travel programs include study leaders, guest speakers, and a focus on contemporary topics and issues in the countries we visit.

Position Summary
The Commonwealth Club is seeking a dynamic travel professional to assist in all daily activities for supporting and expanding our educational affinity travel program. This position provides a breadth of experience in many aspect of the travel industry.

Primary Duties
Responsibilities include working closely with the Travel director to help meet customer service, marketing and sales goals through—but not limited to—the following activities:

Customer Service/Sales
• Handle all phone and email inquiries
• Take trip reservations with excellent knowledge of our programs and destinations
• Create and mail trip materials to prospects and travelers
• Cover all department needs and customer service issues when the Travel Director is out

Marketing
• Update travel website with testimonials, trip updates and other content
• Create email marketing for trips and events
• Update Club Facebook page with photos, trip updates and news supporting our travel program
• Maintain in-house travel display

Administrative, Research and Analytical Duties
• Maintain current travel information in Raiser’s Edge database (knowledge of Raiser’s Edge a plus)
• Assist with risk management/insurance issues with clients and vendors
• Research destinations for news articles to disseminate to travelers, photos for marketing collateral, and for potential guest speakers and study leaders
• Research Club print and audio archives for destination-related content
• Prepare reports on post-trip feedback and statistics
• Maintain our list of study leaders, guest speakers, and consulate contacts

Tour Managing and Event Coordination
• Tour manage 2-3 travel programs a year to international and domestic destinations
• Assist in preparing and running travel-related evening events

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
• Natural disposition toward customer service
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to communicate with an educated and savvy audience of travelers
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
• Skilled with Word, Excel, database programs, social media and internet research
• Ability to meet deadlines and work independently
• Dynamic personality and easy ability to be “on” 24/7, with a smile
• Tour management skills and/or event management skills
• Flexibility to travel, and to attend programs and functions outside normal business hours
• Proven ability to exercise good and independent judgment and to act tactfully
• Ability to handle emergency situations with maturity, calm and intelligence
• Sense of humor and enjoys working in a fast-paced collaborative environment
• Strong commitment to the mission and values of The Commonwealth Club and the transformative power of educational travel

Hours
This is a full-time position in our San Francisco office.

Education
Bachelor's Degree

Work Experience
Minimum 3 years professional experience in the travel industry, preferably with experience working in the educational or non-profit travel market. The Club considers both experience and potential when hiring.
