Book Discussion: "The Tiger's Wife" by Tea Obreht

Book Discussion: The Tiger's Wife by Tea Obreht

This program is sold out

The Tiger's Wife uses fables, allegories and events borrowed from headlines to illustrate the complexities of Balkan history while unearthing patterns of suspicion, superstition and everyday violence that pervade the region even in times of peace. Natalia, the narrator, is a young doctor who lives with her mother and grandparents in an unnamed Balkan city in the early 21st century.  Natalia likes to see herself as somebody with an edge; too rational to be cowed by old-fashioned superstitions and too modern for old-fashioned folk music. In retelling the experiences of her grandfather's generation, Natalia folds them into her own. Old and new memories collide in a vibrant collage that has no date and no dateline.
