Only a nickel out of every medical-care dollar spent goes toward keeping Americans healthy, says Gerberding. She proposes changing the way we think about personal health care. Changes include making our communities healthier by creating more bicycle lanes and walkable sidewalks, making school lunches nutritious and banning smoking in public areas.
