A Conversation: Reefer Sanity - Seven Great Myths About Marijuana

Kevin A. Sabet, Director, Drug Policy Institute, University of Florida; Assistant Professor, College of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry; Co-founder, Project Smart Approaches to Marijuana; Author, Reefer Sanity: Seven Great Myths About Marijuana

Marijuana is the topic of the hour in state legislatures and living rooms around the country. In a historic move, Colorado and Washington recently began their experiment with the legalization of the sale and possession of cannabis for recreational use. And a record number of Americans support legalization. Are we on our way to a national marijuana legalization policy?

Not so fast, says Dr. Sabet, arguably one of the most experienced drug policy advisors in the United States. After serving as senior advisor to President Obama’s drug czar from 2009 to 2011, Dr. Sabet is currently the director of the Drug Policy Institute at the University of Florida. Sabet presents a compelling argument for considering the costs of marijuana legalization, drawn from his almost two decades of research and policymaking in this area. Rather than legalize marijuana or jail people for its use, Sabet contends, a smart approach to policy is required, one based on science, public health, and public safety instead of fear and rhetoric.
