Tani Cantil-Sakauye, California Supreme Court Chief Justice:

Tani Cantil-Sakauye

California Supreme Court Chief Justice

Jeffrey Brand, Dean and Chairman, Center of Law and Global Justice, University of San Francisco Law School (Moderator)

The first Asian-Filipina American and second woman to serve as the state’s chief justice, Cantil-Sakauye will report on the state of the judiciary and the impact three years of cumulative budget reductions have had on the courts and the public. In her view, the cuts have threatened the independence of the judiciary and curtailed access to justice. “It has become a civil rights issue,” she says. “In times of crisis, when services are cut, jobs are lost, and homes are taken, the courts serve as the safety net for a civil society."
