Congressman John Garamendi: On Health-Care Reform and Offshore Oil Drilling

John Garamendi, Member of Congress, California’s 10th Congressional District
Lisa Vorderbrueggen, Political Reporter and Columnist, Contra Costa Times, Bay Area News Group and MediaNews - Moderator

Garamendi is a strong advocate of two hot-button topics: health-care reform and banning offshore drilling. Arguments over the pros and cons of the recently passed health-care reform bill continue. Animosity and frustration are growing over what should be done to stop the BP oil spill and what kind of legislation, if any, should be passed to address this problem in the future. New to Congress, Garamendi just proposed his first bill, The West Coast Ocean Protection Act of 2010, which would create a permanent ban on new offshore oil and natural gas drilling from platforms in federal waters near California, Oregon and Washington. Garamendi believes in keeping off-shore drilling out of California waters and safeguarding our environment. He was also a strong advocate for health-care reform. He is a supporter of a public option and a single-payer health-care plan, so while he is happy about the passage of health-care reform, he wants more.
