School Field Trips

"This is one of the best things my students will do all year.”

Teacher, San Francisco Unified School District

Creating Citizens School Field Trips connect students with civic leaders and encourage them to engage in civil dialogue.

Young people need to see that the path to civic leadership and engagement, is an attainable one. Elected officials can make a difference, but so can journalists, educators, activists and artists.

We invite civic leaders to talk to students about their journeys, what they wish they had known when they were younger, and what young people can do to become civically engaged in their communities. Most important, all our speakers answer the question: Why is it important to talk and work with people we disagree with?

That idea—talking and working with people we disagree with—then gets built upon. We ask students to explore difficult civic questions: Do you think police officers should be posted in schools? Do you think people in prison should be able to vote?

Civil dialogue is a skill. It needs to be practiced and encouraged at a young age. We create a comfortable space for students to share their opinions about serious issues, while also listening to, learning from, and questioning one another.

“I realized that if I can educate even one person about a problem happening in our community, that can spread to others and actually make an impact.”
