Celebrating Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month on The Michelle Meow Show 5/10/18

Join us as Michelle Meow brings her long-running daily radio show to The Commonwealth Club one day each week. Meet fascinating—and often controversial—people discussing important issues of interest to the LGBTQ community, and have your questions ready.

This week's in-studio guest: Amy Sueyoshi

Amy Sueyoshi is the interim dean of the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University, the first and only entire college of ethnic studies, which houses the five departments of Africana Studies, American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, Latina/o Studies, and Race and Resistance Studies. She holds a Ph.D. in history from UCLA and a B.A. from Barnard College of Columbia University. More than 70 faculty members in the College of Ethnic Studies instruct 8,000 students a semester.

Amy’s research interests lie primarily in Asian American and queer studies. She has two books, Queer Compulsions: Race, Nation, and Sexuality in the Affairs of Yone Noguchi (2012) and Discriminating Sex: White Leisure and the Making of the American “Oriental” (2018). She authored the essay on Asians and Pacific Islanders for the National Parks Service historic LGBTQ theme study. Amy is also a founding co-curator of the GLBT History Museum, the first queer history museum in the United States, the recipient of the Willie Walker Award for service for the GLBT Historical Society, and the Clio Award for her contribution to queer history. In 2017 San Francisco Pride honored Amy as a Community Grand Marshal.
