Recently, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas came to The Commonwealth Club to tell an Inforum audience about his decision to announce publicly that he was an undocumented immigrant. Having been brought to the United States with improper papers when he was a child, Vargas didn't even learn that he wasn't here legally until he tried to get a driver's license.

Today, the Obama administration announced that it would not seek deportation of immigrants such as Vargas who had been brought here as children. Senator Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) has long made the argument that "these young people should not be punished for their parents’ mistakes." The Obama administration has apparently agreed.

It is not yet known how this will affect Vargas' case specifically, but he did tweet after the announcement that he was not currently in deportation proceedings, and then later added "Nothing like seeing the people make @BarackObama change his immigration policy."
