Throughout history, travellers have recognized that accurate geographic pictures coupled with linguistic markers offer indispensible information about how to get to, get out of, get back to, or avoid altogether a particular place. The Commonwealth Club's antiquarian map collection, dating back to 1562, offers a glimpse of travel guides from an age of empire-building, exploration and trade. This antiquarian map collection can also be viewed at the Club's San Francisco office.
