The Great Recession has occurred in part because some people in the U.S. are financially illiterate, making them vulnerable to too-good-to-be-true mortgage offers, derivatives and other financial schemes. When these schemes failed, the economy cratered, and with it many jobs, investments and retirement plans. Nationally and personally, we will be digging ourselves out of this economic hole for years. Financial illiteracy affects us all, and we won’t have a healthy economy until more American understand basic personal finance. A lively panel will debate this question and offer ideas about how to better educate and protect the average American, and the American economy as a whole.
