HARRY REID, U.S. Senator (D-NV); Senate Majority Leader; Author, The Good Fight

The Good Fight

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will no doubt offer his take on the current race for the U.S. Presidential seat. He will also discuss where he finds the resolve and ideals that power his political career and how he journeyed from a childhood of deep poverty in the tiny mining town of Searchlight, Nevada to his current place in Washington, D.C.

Reid, who was voted unanimously to represent the Democrats as Senate Leader in 2004, has led during a time of clashing ideologies. Known for his ability to bring together Republicans and Democrats in passing legislation, he was instrumental in orchestrating the Energy Bill, which promises to create new fuel economy standards for the first time in 30 years and increase production of biofuel. In 1998 Reid was re-elected to a third Senate term and was chosen as the Democratic “Whip”. As Nevada Senator he created the state’s only National Park, passed legislation to develop solar and alternative energy, and expanded health insurance to residents.

In 1967 Reid became a member of the Nevada State Assembly and then became lieutenant governor. He has also served as chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission where he received multiple death threats and helped police stop high level bribery.

A son of Mormon parents who didn’t graduate high school, Reid is a graduate of Southern Utah State College, Utah State University and George Washington School of Law. While studying law, he worked as a U.S. Capitol police officer to support his family.
