Bicycle Safety Town Hall keynote (6/3/09)

How can bicyclists and motorists safely share the road? Over the past 10 years, nearly 200 Bay Area bicyclists have been killed and more than 25,000 injured, according to the California Highway Patrol. CHP statistics also show that during that time, Santa Clara County had the highest number of fatalities and injuries compared to the nine other Bay Area counties. Bicycling advocates say that one solution is to raise the awareness of motorists that bicyclists are out there and enforce existing laws toward drivers involved in fatal collisions with bicyclists. Currently, several states have passed laws requiring drivers to give bicyclists a minimum three-foot berth as they pass. However, an attempt last year by Assemblyman Pedro Nava to get a similar law passed in California was unsuccessful. Join us for this special town hall meeting to discuss ways to reduce the large number of bicycle injuries and fatalities that are steadily rising each year.

This program was recorded in front of a live audience at the Commonwealth Club of California on June 3, 2009.
