Fracked Nation

TJ Glauthier, Former Deputy U.S. Secretary of Energy; former board member, Union Drilling
Mark Zoback, Professor, Stanford University School of Earth Sciences
Kassie Siegel, Senior Counsel, Climate Law Institute Director

With a thriving natural gas market in the U.S., oil and energy companies are in a race for fracking rights across the country. The fracking bonanza has led to concern about the oversight of hydraulic fracturing practices. Some states, including Vermont, have reacted by banning fracking altogether until further research is done. Others are working to create regulations as fracking continues apace. Will fracking bolster U.S. economic competitiveness? What are the environmental impacts? How is fracking challenging the status quo in American energy?

Time: 5-6 p.m. program

Tempting oil reserves trapped in California shale are driving a fracking boom in California. The federal government has started auctioning off leases on public lands with fracking access to the highly anticipated Monterey Shale oil reserves. Energy suppliers and proponents say fracking will provide more affordable American energy. Agricultural interests are concerned about water supply and contamination. Environmental groups are suing California to regulate the hydraulic fracturing industry. Will the new California fracking regulations make fracking safer and remove the mystery from the practice? How could fracking impact California’s economy?
