President Ilves will discuss Estonia’s commitment to transatlantic relations and toward promoting democracy and free-market economic policy globally. A member of the European Union and NATO, Estonia is a strong ally and partner of the United States, a relationship that has been constant and strong since it restored its independence in 1991. In addition to having Estonian troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, Estonia has been a strong supporter of EU enlargement and democratic developments in key countries of the former Soviet Union and beyond.
