Queen of Jordan; Founder, Royal Endowment for Culture and Education; Founder, Arab Children's Congress; Founder, The Jerash Festival for Culture and Arts
Welcome to the Commonwealth Club of California. It is my privilege to introduce to you Her Majesty Queen Noor al Hussein, of the Kingdom of Jordan.
Her Majesty is the daughter of a prominent Arab-American family. She was born Lisa Najeeb Halaby in Washington, D.C. She attended schools here in California, in Washington and New York before receiving her high school diploma from Concord Academy in Massachusetts. In 1974 Her Majesty graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Architecture and Urban Planning. After graduation, she participated in several international urban planning and design projects in the United States, Australia, Iran, Jordan and other countries in the Middle East. In l976, she began work on the preparation of a master plan for the Arab Air University to be established in Amman. Subsequently she joined Alia, the Royal Jordanian Airline, in l977 as Director of Planning and Design.
His Majesty King Hussein and Her Majesty Queen Noor were married in Amman on June 15, 1978. They have two sons, His Royal Highness Prince Hamzah and His Royal Highness Prince Hashim, and one daughter, Her Royal Highness Princess Iman. Queen Noor directs her efforts to long-term projects concerned with the impact on the quality of life in Jordan. The projects and activities under her guidance and sponsorship include those in the areas of education, art, cultural awareness, environmental protection, social welfare, architecture, child care, women's development and international understanding.
And, on that note, she is here to discuss today "Middle East Peace: Challenge to America's Principles." Please join me in welcoming Her Majesty Queen Noor al Hussein.
