Benjamin Barber
Kekst Professor of Civil Society at the University of Maryland; Author, Jihad vs. McWorld

After September 11, many Americans turned to Barber's 1995 book, Jihad vs. McWorld, in an attempt to make sense of the horrific events. His critical study of the links between global capitalism, anti-American sentiment and the root causes of terrorism warned of the crisis threatening our future if we do not restrain the anarchic tendencies of consumer capitalism and tribal fundamentalism. In his second visit to the Club, Barber identifies the concepts, rather than the military actions he thinks we should employ to confront our troubled present.
